Steve Swell ist eine musikalische Persönlichkeit, die in allen Lagern sein kreatives intelligentes Profil zeigt. Sein Handwerk hat der virtuose Posaunist einst in den Bands von Lionel Hampton oder Buddy Rich gelernt, und die haben ja bekanntlich nicht jeden Gickser angestellt. Bald schon wechselte der gelenkige und äußerst expressive Musiker ins radikalere Fach und zu Leuten wie Bill Dixon, Anthony Braxton oder Cecil Taylor, um schließlich in den 90er Jahren mit Tim Berne´s Caos Totale und Joey Baron´s Barondown zu spielen und mit John Zorn, Elliott Sharp und Butch Morris gemeinsame Sache zu machen. Zur Zeit ist der 57-jährige New Yorker unter anderem Mitglied von Ken Vandermarks großformatigem Resonance Ensemble.
Mit seinem eigenen Trio, in dem mit Michael Vatcher ein bekannter Meister des filigranen Schlagwerkspiels sitzt, kommt Swell nun erstmals nach Österreich. Gegenstand: frei von der Leber Weg improvisierter Jazz mit klaren Spielregeln bis zur dichten Interaktion, distinguiert und doch expressiv energetisch. Rein akustisch - ohne Kabel!
Trombonist Steve Swell (US), drummer Michael Vatcher (NL) and Jon Rune Strom (N) on bass – a special trio - also known as „Special Ops“ - that gets behind enemy lines and manages the impossible mission of rescuing the art of music improvisation from those that wish to imprison it in their own memories. They get under the barbed wire that critics have placed around this gulag of fond memories and even some musicians help to maintain. Each night they storm the Bastille to rescue free improvisation from its shackles of complacency and ordered systems and release acoustic improvisations that are truly present and free from the pleasant memories of another era and let new sound worlds bloom and blossom in this ever eternal now.
